New Orleans has a well-deserved reputation as a culinary center. We have every kind of restaurant you can imagine, and are a proving grounds of sorts for new chefs coming onto the scene, which means we are host to many new dining options all the time. A foodie vacation to New Orleans is an exercise in abundance – how to narrow down the choices available to get the best experience. We’re going to attempt to help you out by showing some of our favorite spots.
Let’s start with a classic – Galatoire’s is a New Orleans Institution. Founded in 1905, it is a lovely spot for a special meal. It’s located right on Bourbon Street and features gorgeous French-style food, with the decadent sauces you crave. How about Crabmeat au Gratin, or a filet with Lyonnaise Potatoes? Are you swooning yet?
Now we move on to Compère Lapin, which means “Brother Rabbit” in French. This is a newer place, having only been open about a year. It’s run by star chef Chef Nina Compton. The food is varied – you might start with an apertif from the bar and small bites, then move to Hamachi with melon and Nasturtiums, or Curried Goat with Sweet Potato Gnocchi and Cashews. The plates are works of art.
When you’re wanting something that you can eat with your hands, you can’t beat a Poor Boy, a.k.a.Po Boy – from Parkway Bakery, right here in Mid-City. They’ve been voted best Poor Boys in New Orleans many times, and even had a visit from the POTUS himself! They have over 20 varieties, but you can’t go wrong with a traditional fried shrimp or oyster versions.
This is but a small sampling of the incredible dining options in our beautiful city. Take advantage of the off-season and visit while it’s hot – you can get stroll the streets without the crowds, or just have delicious meals punctuated by naps in air conditioned comfort at 1896 O’Malley House – now that sounds like a vacation!
