2013 Buku Music + Art Project in New Orleans

The 2013 Buku Music + Art Project will be held on March 8th and 9th at Mardi Gras World found in downtown New Orleans’ warehouse district.

On Friday, March 8th, you’ll find such acts as Kid Cudi, Primus 3D, Flux Pavilion, and more.

On Saturday, March 8th, rock out with Calvin Harris, Passion Pit, Kendrick Lamar, and many more.

Buku will bring amazing art installations to the 2013 festival, but they are keeping the details quiet in anticipation of the event.  Buku will also delicious food stands provided by local restaurants, a wonderful alternative to the typical festival fare.

Get Into History with the New Orleans Spring Fiesta – 2013

Well, Mardi Gras is underway and we survived the Super Bowl – it’s time to step back in time for the New Orleans Spring Fiesta.  The festival features two weekends of events packed full of historic New Orleans culture, and entertainment.  Make your reservation to stay at 1896 O’Malley House, to complete your weekend of history and elegance.

Events kick off on Saturday, March 2nd with a French Quarter Walking Tour in the 2004Parade_3morning.  This is a reasonably priced guided walking tour will give you the chance to explore the luxury and grandeur of historic homes that are not featured in any other walking tour.  Saturday afternoon features a walking tour of more historic homes in the Lower Garden District.  Enjoy stunning decor and intriguing stories of the homes among massive oaks.  Saturday ends with the presentation of the Spring Fiesta Queen and her court followed by a  “Night in Old New Orleans” Parade.

Walking Tours are available all day Sunday, March 3rd; Saturday, March 9th; and Sunday, March 10th.

Mardi Gras History

Mardi Gras celebrations began as early as 1699, before the French adopted it and brought it to North America.  Once in New Orleans, balls and fetes thrived, were forbidden, and eventually resumed …the party could not be stopped!  Mardi Gras grew from masked people traveling through the streets to official parades.  In spite of the ups and downs, Mardi Gras remains to be America’s biggest party, and truly an amazing event!

New Year’s Eve – An All Night New Orleans Party!

Well the holidays are upon us which means 2013 is right around the corner!  So, may we ask, what are you doing New Year’s Eve?

As you know, the party never stops in New Orleans where there is something for everyone!

Enjoy live entertainment in Jackson Square where the revelry starts several hours before midnight.   Then at midnight, from the rooftop of Jax Brewery, a large object falls from an illuminated perch – a tradition signaling the start of 2013.  Join the festivities to find out exactly what the large object is, as it’s a mystery every year!  Then the skies of New Orleans brighten with its famous 15-minute firework show, displayed from two barges in the river.

Celebrate Christmas – New Orleans Style

New Orleans is an amazing place to be year round, but December is a special time to be here.  NOLA is known as an amazing place to spend Christmas – and I can’t wait to share some if the festivities with you!

The New Orleans Online website is a tremendous resource for Christmas – New Orleans style.  The website provides details about Revellion Dinners, Music, Nightlife, Shopping, and Holiday Events.  I’ve highlighted a few “can’t miss” events, here.

Throughout the month of December, enjoy a holiday show featuring the vocal trio, Victory Belles.  This Christmas performance features songs to put you in the spirit of the season.  For more information see their website.

From December 7-9, enjoy the 13th Annual Holiday on the Boulevard Festival for a family festival and holiday marketplace.  In true New Orleans flavor, party with local rhythms and celebrate Christmas NOLA style.

Speaking of New Orleans Christmas traditions, don’t miss the 37th Annual Holiday Home Tour on December 8-9.  You have the opportunity to tour seven historic homes and take in the history, architecture, and festive decor.

For a very special event, check out the Cajun Holiday Tea with Papa Noel Cruse.  Throughout the weekends in December, embark on the Creole Queen Paddlewheeler with Papa Noel, and enjoy many Cajun traditions such as storytelling, treats – entertainment for the whole family!

Christmas at 1896 O’Malley House

The Christmas season is upon us and the inn is getting dressed up in her holiday finery. We spend hours decking the halls so that our guests will feel the Spirit of Christmas all around as you enjoy the Joyeux Noël in New Orleans.

The door greets you with a lovely natural wreath.

The parlor is home to the crowning glory, a behemoth Tannenbaum covered with sparkling lights and special ornaments.

Breakfast is more enjoyable with the dining room all embellished in seasonal splendor.

Mirrors over the mantel reflect the glory of traditional crimson, evergreen and gold decorations. Wouldn’t Papa Noel like to come down a chimney dressed so prettily!

Even the staircase is ornamented for your pleasure!

Christmas in New Orleans – Revillion Feasts

The holidays are here and New Orleans is the place to celebrate in style!  Make your dinner reservations – the restaurants are ready for the Revillion feasts!  For those of you unfamiliar with the Revillion tradition, let me tell you about this festive New Orleans Christmas custom.

“Revillion” means “awakening” and these Creole feasts began during the 19th century, a practice borrowed from passed down from their European heritage.  Originally, Catholic Creoles spent Christmas Eve fasting, and the Revillion dinners were prepared to be enjoyed after Midnight Mass.  Families would return to their homes after the late service ravenous to enjoy the sumptuous Revillion feast that they had prepared.  Overtime, American Christmas customs replaced the Creole holiday customs and Revillion feasts faded away.

The Revillion feasts experienced a reawakening in the 1990′s – and as with other customs, it evolved to accommodate the contemporary New Orleans lifestyle.  Modern Revillion feasts are available in a variety of wonderful restaurants throughout the month of December.  Participating restaurants prepare menus featuring their interpretation of traditional Revillion dishes.  When you are staying at 1896 O’Malley House, make reservations at one of our wonderful restaurants to participate in this New Orleans’ Creole Christmas tradition.
