The Louisiana Marathon – January 17th -19th, 2014 – Geaux Run!

Louisiana Marathon logo - green and brown sneaker footprint The third annual Louisiana Marathon will be held in Baton Rouge on January 19th, 2014, but you don’t have to wait until then to get into the fun of the “Running Festival”! The festivities start on Friday the 17th at the Baton Rouge River Center, where the Expo will be taking place from 1-6pm. The Expo is open to and free to the public, and is the place to pick up your registration packets for all of the races, as there will be no packet pick-up on the race day. Over 35 exhibitors will be on the Expo floor to present all the latest trends and updates in running. See the latest gear and get information about about the world of running, health & fitness. The Expo continues on Saturday from 11am-5pm.

Also on Saturday, tons of fun continue with the 5K race and the Advocate Kids Marathon, which is a 1.2 mile race. The 5K is for sprinters, joggers and walkers. Make sure to register in advance for these two races. A special treat is in store for runners who choose to participate in the 5K AND the marathon or half-marathon – the Deja Va Crawfish Platter. Along with the races, Saturday will be a great time at AZ Young Park for the kids with the Family Fest, which will feature lots of music, inflatables, face painting, food, and much more. Also on the 18th, there will be speakers on running, as well as the highly anticipated Pastalya Dinner, a chance to carb-load before the big race!

Sunday is the big day! The marathon and half both start at 7am. Continuing through the day will be music all through the race course, and the “best marathon post-party”, the Finish Festival at AZ Young Park.

Support your Team: 40th Annual Bayou Classic – Nov 26-Dec 1, 2013

Check out a week full of events leading up to the Bayou Classic, a football game featuring one of the oldest college rivalries: Grambling State University and Southern University (in no particular order).  Events kick-off on November 26 and continue through Sunday Brunch on December 1, 2013.  We invite fans and alumni of the universities to make 1896 O’Malley House Bed & Breakfast their home-base throughout the week, as it is less than 3 miles from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome - the primary location for most events.

5K Drinks Festivals Louisiana Events New Orleans Attractions Oktoberfest wine

New Orleans Oktoberfest, October 2013

oktoberfestFall is here – and with it comes milder temperatures, changing leaves, and BEER!  Enjoy lots of beer along with good German food, music, and lots of activities for three weekends in October.  That’s right – it’s time for Oktoberfest!  Oktoberfest is organized every year by Deutsches Haus, known as The German Presence in New Orleans.

Enjoy Oktoberfest 2013 during the weekends of October 11-12, 18-19, and 25-26.  Each of those weekends Oktoberfest happens on Fridays from 4-11 pm and Saturdays from 1-11 pm.  After the party, return to 1896 O’Malley House Bed and Breakfast, just a short drive away, to rest up from the events and rejuvenate for another full day of exploring NOLA.

Each day of Oktoberfest you can enter into a $500 Cash Door Prize, the drawing will be held October 26.  You do not need to be present to win.  Also, every day at 6:30, 7:30 and 9:30  you can participate in the Masskrugstemmen which is a Beer Stein Holding Contest.  Can you beat the current record of 20 min 19 sec?

Other events include:
Saturday, October 12 – Dachshund Races:  Who can resist those tiny little legs racing to the finish line!  Proceeds from this event go to a good cause, NOLA Dachshund Rescue.

Saturday, October 19 – Oktoberfest 5K Run/Walk:  This is the first annual Oktoberfest 5K, and is organized by the New Orleans Track Club.  Entry into the race includes admission to Oktoberfest after the race, so you can refuel.  So whether you are an avid runner or enjoy a brisk walk – you’ll enjoy this course.

Saturday, October 26 – Wine Tasting of Wines of Europe:  Beer isn’t the only think that Oktoberfest is about, check out wines from Germany, Austria, and the Alsace region.  The wine tasting is $30 per person – and a ticket to the wine tasting includes admission to Oktoberfest.  What more could you want?

San Fermin en Nueva Orleans – July 11-14, 2013

Thursday, July 11 – Kick-off the festival with Marques de Caceras Wine Dinner where the delicious cuisine is perfectly paired with Marques de Caceres wines for an exquisite, an ideal way to begin the festival.

Friday, July 12 – Officially begin the San Fermin in Nueva Orleans with El Txupinazo (pronounced el choo-pee-naht-so).  Meet other festival-goers and enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine.  Get into the spirit with festive red and white attire. 

Saturday, July 13 – This is the day you’ve been waiting for!  Instead of being chased by real bulls – they take some of the stress out of it and send the RollerBulls after you!  These roller derby girls from Big Easy Rollergirls and other leagues will chase and “gore” all festival goers.  This event is huge – expect over 14,000 runners and 400 RollerBulls.

After the excitement, enjoy cocktails and a concert put on my local musicians to relax and celebrate your survival!

Sunday, July 14 – Round off the crazy weekend with the El Pobre de Mi, a relaxing event featuring a tapas brunch and specialty drinks.  Then enjoy the 4th Annual Ernest Hemingway Celebration & Talent Contest including a variety of theatrical events.

The Running of the Bulls in Spain is a once in a lifetime event – but the San Fermin in Nueva Orleans is something you won’t want to miss…again and again!  It will be crazy and fun – not just another New Orleans festival!  While you are spending this exciting weekend in New Orleans – be sure to rest yourself in our inn.  1896 O’Malley House Bed & Breakfast offers cozy beds and great bathtubs for soaking – you’ll enjoy the recovery.

Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo New Orleans, May 17-19, 2013

Saturday, May 18th check out the Bicycle Pub Crawl beginning at 8 AM and taking you to 6 local eateries for coffee, beignets, local personalities, and southern hospitality!  Traveling without your wheels?  Bicycle rentals are available.

Sunday, May 19th enjoy a 11-mile ride, Bicycle Second Line, beginning at Bayou St. John and ending at Bayou Boogaloo.  In typical NOLA style, this easy ride goes at parade pace and even includes life music!  Don’t miss it!

Zurich Classic of New Orleans 2013

zurich1Welcome, golfers and golf fans to our beloved NOLA for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.  Visit us April 22-28 for this annual stop on the PGA Tour.  The tournament takes place at Tournament Players Club of Louisiana, which is a little bit over 11 miles from 1896 O’Malley House Bed and Breakfast.  We know you will find that our accommodations and the nearby attractions and restaurants will give you the full flavor of a New Orleans vacation.

Watch with excitement as your favorite pros compete throughout the tournament.  Want to challenge the pros?  Participate in one of the three Pro-Am events available.  Proceeds from this tournament support cultivating a love of golf in children through the Fore!Kids Foundation.  Fore!Kids Foundation creates programs benefiting Louisiana’s own children.

New Orlean’s Own Crescent City Classic 2013

2009-crescent-city-classic-7b2264bfa7654fd7Coming down to New Orleans for the All State Sugarbowl Crescent City Classic?  Recuperate from this 10K in the comfortable accommodations at 1896 O’Malley House Bed and Breakfast!  Our delicious breakfast will nourish you and we can even offer pampering in a local spa after your run.

The Crescent City Classic (CCC) is a New Orleans tradition for over 30 years, and it keeps growing.  This 10K run takes the party to the pavement, and attracts about 20,000 participants.   This year the CCC has expanded for more events throughout the year, so be sure to stay with us when you return for them:

June 8 – Crescent Connection Bridge Run – 4 mile run 300 feet over the Mississippi River!

November 9 – Crescent City Fall Classic – 5K for all running levels, can be used as a qualifier for the 10K CCC.

December 7 – Celebration in the Oaks Run/Walk – A festive 2 mile walk/run especially popular with families and includes a post-race party.  See the Celebration in the Oaks Light Display.
