More New Orleans Events in August 2013

August is a delicious month in New Orleans, thanks to COOLinary New Orleans, where you can enjoy special meals in many local restaurants and dig into great New Orleans cuisine!  But that’s not all – New Orleans has a variety of events to help you enjoy every last minute of summer.

August 1-4 – Check out the 13th Annual Satchmo Summerfest, a festival celebrating the great Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong.  This event provides a weekend full of live jazz music from local performers.  There will also be interesting seminars and speakers.  There will be plenty to eat as well with local restaurants providing delicious items at the festival.

 

 

Saturday, August 3 – Enjoy the Whitney White Linen Night, a free local art reception featuring live music, delicious food, and the 2013 Signature Drink: Epic Vodka Ginger Mint Lemonade.  This festival along Julia Street is a New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center fundraiser and is a great way to explore our local art.

 

 

Saturday, August 10 – Pull out your red dress and join us for the 2 mile Red Dress Run.  This is a charity run organized and hosted by The New Orleans Hash House Harriers, and guaranteed to give you a good time!         It’s not just about the run – but it also about the party featuring live music, delicious food, and lots of beer to keep you going!

 

 

Saturday, August 10, After the Red Dress Run, check out the 12th Annual Dirty Linen Night, another art night Royal Street featuring art, crafts, and antiques in 40-50 shops.  You’ll find Dirty Rice and Dirty Martinis available throughout the event plus wandering clowns, local music, and other types of street entertainment.

Drink It In! 11th Annual Tales of the Cocktail – July 17-21, 2013

tales-of-the-cocktailThe 11th Annual Tales of the Cocktail will be held in the French Quarter from July 17th to July 21st. This year’s theme is “Drink It In!”, with The Rickey as the Official Cocktail. Festivities kick off on July 17th at 2pm at Hotel Monteleone with a complimentary event to present the ceremonial first toast.

After that, the events come fast and furious, with excursions, special events, seminars, contests (including the Bare Knuckle Bar Fight, featuring teams from all over the US duking it out to bring the best bar experience to the judges), awards, dinners, lunches, tasting rooms and more. You can even download an app for that!

To celebrate this premier educational event for bartenders and people in the hospitality industry, as well as cocktail enthusiasts, enjoy this Rickey Recipe, the 2013 Official Cocktail Competition winner:
Portland Rickey
Originator: Jacob Grier from Metrovino in Portland, Oregon
Glass: HighballPortland-Rickey
Recipe:
1 1/2 oz Martin Miller’s Gin
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
1/4 oz Green Chartreuse
4 oz aison or biere de garde style beer
squeezed half of lemon (lemon shell), for garnish

Directions:
Combine the Martin Miller’s Gin, Green Chartreuse, lemon juice, and beer in an ice-filled highball glass. Drop the squeezed half-lemon into the drink. Gently stir.
Garnish:  Squeezed half of lemon, stirred into the drink as a nod to tradition.
